The study of seismic waves is known as seismology. Seismologists use seismic waves to learn about earthquakes and also to learn about the Earth’s interior. The two types of seismic waves described in “Plate Tectonics,” P-waves and S-waves, are known as body waves because they move through the solid body of the Earth.Fig. 1: Ring seismology constrains Saturn’s core–envelope interface. a, Candidate distributions of heavy elements as a function of radius within Saturn. b, The resulting N, scaled to Saturn ...to seismic theory, designed as a rst course for graduate students or advanced undergraduate students. It clearly explains the fundamental concepts, emphasizing intuitive understanding over lengthy derivations, and outlines the different types of seismic waves and how they can be used to resolve Earth structure and understand earthquakes.

The analysis is quantitative and typically requires high-powered computers. On 14 August 2021, a moment magnitude ( Mw) 7.2 earthquake struck the southern peninsula of Haiti ( Fig. 1A ), leaving ~2500 people dead, 13,000 injured, at least 140,000 houses destroyed or damaged, and a number of water, sanitation, and health facilities severely affected ( 1 ). Because the earthquake affected an area that is mostly rural ...

Paleoseismology is a relatively young method of earthquake studies at the interface between geology and seismology. Paleoseismic investigations have enriched the fault rupture database in some active zones (e.g., California, Turkey, Italy) and contribute to a significant progress in the concept of earthquake cycle. The science behind earthquakes.
