Eon geology
Although astronomers and geologists use the word “eon” to mean 1 billion years, it is more commonly used to refer to any long, indefinite period of time. Like the words “age,” “epoch” and “era,” it does not refer to a set number of years.The term geon (for geological eon) refers to large, geologic units of time. Geologists traditionally subdivide Earth history into a hierarchy of named intervals: eons, eras, periods, etc. (e.g., the Jurassic Period of the Mesozoic Era). Historians subdivide the history of human activity into intervals that are comparatively much shorter.
