Everytime I start walking across ice and I hear it start to crack I pull a 180 and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fast book it back the way I came. Has happened about four times but I haven't fallen through the ice yet. I don't know the specific mechanics on breaking ice, but it only seems to happen when I'm near the edge of the map.
