I have a g 260/6 in my 86 535i, and the whining and rattling is getting louder. After 220,000 miles, its time to start thinking about a rebuild. I'd like to know if anyone knows of a reputable Getrag rebuilder/exchanger. Doesnt need to be local to where I am located. I prefer to get new/ rebuilt rather than risk a faulty used unit. The Getrag 280 can best be described as a hybrid of a Getrag 260 and 265 transmission. The front and back transmission case sections come from a later 260. Like the 260, the shift forks are aluminum and wear out prematurely. Aug 7, 2018 · Reinstall the thrust washer and ball bearing on the shaft. Reinstall the spacer sleeve using the 1.5in pipe you used to remove the front end of the transmission case. Use a hammer, it should go back on without the need for a press with short easy taps. Reinstall the 3rd gear and synchro. Reinstall the guide sleeve.
