I feel like there is a huge range of experiences. It took us quite some time (1.5 hr or so) to get through Customs when we landed in April, but we arrived at the same time as a bunch of other flights. Most other people here have not as bad of luck and less that 45 minutes seems to be the norm here.
At JFK it usually takes no more than 5-10 minutes to clear immigration. That said, it may take another 10-15 minutes to actually get our bags and then another 2-3 minutes to clear customs and exit. It depends on how quick they offload all the luggage but I've been out the door within 30-45 mins and I think an hour was the longest (that time the bags took ages coming on to the carousel).
