it has a dry sump system, which pumps the oil into the tank. then back to the oil pump for lubrication of the engine. some engines let the tank drain back into the crankcase fast. then when you check the tank it's empty, but the oil is in the engine. so you add to the tank and run it, it fills the tank which is overfilled now.

Make sure you inspect the o ring (just make sure there is one inside where the filter meets the case and the cover O ring as well. Make you you inspect the crush washers as well on the tank and case and don't over tighten. The LTZ takes 2.2 quarts with the filter change.
