Affective labor and feminist politics One watershed moment for discussions of affective labor falls in 1983, when Arlie Russell Hochschild published The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feel- ing, her germinal study of the emotional labor of flight attendants as typifying production in the “pink collar” post-Fordist service economy.In that, affective labor is rooted in the foundation of human contact and interaction; its “products” are relationships and emotional responses (Oksala 2016). Within this broad scope, we find it useful to highlight what Hochschild defined as “emotional labor”. Note that this distinguishes emotional labor from affective labor.
