If that is true it is a shame I thought the Marlin bolt actions were solid entry level rifles. Since you're still dubious, goffer the Rem 597 and an AR-7 as well. For ~ $100 more than a 795, pop for a 10/22 which the 795 will outshoot in stock form. I found a bull barrel Marlin 7000 at Cabela's and was so impressed with its accuracy I bought a 795 a few days later. Hard to tell much difference in their accuracy.
