Re: SBC 383 vs. SBC 400 (Jenny) I'd probably go for the 383 unless I already had access to a good 400 block. The 23 extra cubes of the 406 (a 400 block with a .030 overbore like the 383) should yield a nearly proportionate power increase but I don't think it would be that noticible a difference unless measured on a dyno or at the strip.

Here are a few good reasons why we think the 427/434 engine is a better choice than the 383 or 406 engine. The 427/434 will accelerate most medium to heavy cars dramatically quicker than the common 383's on the market. The main difference between a 427/434 and the 383 is that the 427/434 torque comes in much lower.406 is just a 400 bore .030" oversize with the factory stock 3.75" stroke, you could also use a 3.875" "stroker" crank to make a 421 at the .030" overbore in a 400. Either of these, and the 383 will easily be able to make 500+ hp and you won't need to rev them over 6800 rpm to do it.

But it's harder to make that power because the bore/stroke relationship is more "truck-like." If you think about a pro-stock engine, they are large bore short stroke and so they have very good cylinder fill characteristics.

The good old argument between SBC vs BBC. Well, I just got done building a 385 (377 .040 over) a 383 is a 377 bored .030. Anyway, if you want something to get from stop light to stop light and don't care about driveability and don't care about longivity or twisting the #&%$ out of it, build a 383 SBC.

Both are 406 SBC with AFR 23 degree heads, one hyd roller the other is solid roller. Both are 10.4 to 1 CR and run fine on 91 octane at 2800 ft altitude. I don't spin them much over 7k RPM. I drive the solid roller cam car (262/269 @ 050) around town with lots of idle time in gear and slow cruise speeds with no issues.

Now, if you can afford all the best in bottom end parts, then this may not seem big. The problem with "More cubes" is that the 400 block can be more fragile than the 350 block.
